Guntrader breach

The personal information of thousands of gun owners has been stolen by hackers from the gun-selling site, Guntrader. A breach was first reported in July, with Guntrader making an announcement via their website.

In September 2021, it was reported that the leaked data had been published online by animal rights activists as a Google-Earth compatible file, leading to concerns for the safety of those whose information was breached.

The breached data includes names, addresses, postcodes, phone numbers and IP addresses of over 100,000 gun owners.

How did the Guntrader breach happen?

It’s not clear how the breach happened, but it’s thought that the information was obtained by hackers from Guntrader’s client records database. The breach has been reported to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) for investigation.

Can I claim compensation for the Guntrader breach?

Due to the nature of this breach, those affected may be eligible to receive significant damages – this is a serious breach of privacy which directly impacts the safety and security of innocent people who have the right to hold a gun licence.

The fact that this information has been shared online, along with Google Earth-compatible coordinates makes this even more distressing for those affected. We would advise anyone who thinks they were affected by the Guntrader data breach to get in touch to see how we can help.
